This is quick. Valentine’s Day is a scam to get your money! That is right, it is about commerce and you pimping out your love to the market so others can make hand over fist on something you already have, a relationship. Unless of course you don’t, then you feel like shit, want one, and want to go out because you don’t want to be alone. And they still get your money. I feel genuine apathy towards this bullshit holiday and yet I celebrate it at times. It is a lot like the Super Bowl, I don’t care… But I am not going to miss out on a good time if I don’t have to.
Let’s get to it. Romance is a peculiar notion. Most people think it is an event, a form of entertainment for one of the participants and an obligation for the other. But in truth, it is little and big gestures that truly make moments romantic. Some build over time, others are big surprising moments, what they have in common is they’re rooted in relationship. When I see flowers delivered, candy given, and a giant teddy bear, I cannot help but wonder how special that is when it is sold at the store in bulk. The only romantic gesture done is that of giving one’s partner the comfort of not being left out. Balderdash to the whole thing.
But here we are stuck in this culture cycle of expression.
Enjoy it if you got it, don’t worry about it if you don’t.
