I am not the hugest nerd. I am a moderate nerd. What that means to me is I know enough about nerd culture and topics to enjoy it, but not enough to take it serious.
So, let’s go back to a discussion that was had at parent teacher conference twenty years ago. My high school art teacher suggested a few things, first I should go to art college, second I work in fantasy art. I didn’t follow his advice. Kids, especially kids who are not connected to reality, don’t take advice well. That is life.
I have been racking my brain the last few days about what I am going to do to accomplish my goals. And like a sour patch kid, the sour but sweet advice comes back to me. Not the going to art school, but the fantasy art.
My skills and interest overlap in the sci-fi/ fantasy genre. There is plenty I could enjoy making, writing, and doing that would make my life happier and prosperous. Knowing the only way to find out if something is going to work is to do it until it does. I am pointing my life and work in that direction.
The thing is, when you like something and your skills and abilities are lined up, you have to go for it. The only real thing holding you back is fear. Fear isn’t a good enough reason to wait. So, find the overlap or make it. Then deploy yourself against it. The longer you wait the more wasted time you have.
Wish me luck.
